SMC Enters Malaysia Book Of Records With Record-Breaking Melanau Swing

Sibu: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has achieved a remarkable feat by securing a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with the construction of an 18.3-meter traditional Melanau swing known as the itut. This impressive structure was a centerpiece of this year’s Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the swing was erected at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 by the Persatuan Kebajikan Melanau Kampung Nangka. Over the course of the 10-day festival, which commenced on July 3, the swing attracted a total of 2,288 visitors, surpassing the initial target of 2,000 visitors, aided by favorable weather conditions.

During the closing ceremony of the 21st edition of BCF, SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh received the MBOR certificate from Edwin Yeoh, a representative of MBOR. The event was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. Dr Sim highlighted that BCF 2025 effectively showcased the cultural richness of Borneo through various performances, community activities, and cultural exhibitions.

Dr Sim emphasized the significance of the festival in fostering unity and reinforcing Bornean identity. His speech, delivered by the State Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, expressed gratitude towards the individuals, government agencies, cultural practitioners, traders, and enforcement officers who contributed to the festival’s success.

Dr Sim pointed out that such events not only provide entertainment but also play a vital role in promoting tourism, enhancing public well-being, and strengthening social bonds. He extended his congratulations to SMC and its co-organizers for hosting one of the most successful editions of BCF, and expressed hope that the unity and cultural appreciation demonstrated during the festival would continue to flourish within the community.

The annual festival brought together over 30 ethnic groups and featured a wide range of programs, including musical performances, art exhibitions, community kitchens, and traditional food bazaars.
