Papar: The cross-connection of pipelines from the Kogopan Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to the main tank pipeline in Kawang is set to immediately address the ongoing water supply disruption that has troubled the district since December last year. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali announced that this initiative has significantly reduced the water supply distance from 33 kilometers to 10.3 kilometers. The measure is intended to bridge the gap while the Kogopan II WTP upgrading project, which commenced in August 2023, is underway and expected to conclude this August.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Papar MP emphasized a 10 percent increase in the capacity of the Kogopan WTP to fulfill the essential needs of residents in Mukim Kinarut and Kawang. This increase is facilitated through the newly cross-connected pipeline network. The capacity enhancement involves cross-connecting the existing pipeline infrastructure from the Kogopan WTP to Mukim Kinarut and Kawang at two strategic locations, along with the replacement of valves and water pumps at the current plant.
In October of the previous year, Armizan highlighted that the construction of the Kogopan II WTP, with a budget allocation of approximately RM365 million, aims to boost the water supply capacity from 40 million liters per day (MLD) to 80 MLD. The on-site construction efforts have been ongoing around the clock since January 9 and are scheduled for completion by January 24.
Armizan noted that the process of replacing valves will necessitate a temporary shutdown of the plant for about 10 hours starting late Tuesday night, January 20, contingent upon weather conditions. This temporary cessation is anticipated to impact several areas within the Papar district, with formal notifications to be provided by the Sabah State Water Department shortly. The minister assured that every possible effort is being made to alleviate the hardships faced by residents who have been enduring these issues for an extended period.
