Kota bharu: Index crime in Kelantan fell by 19.5 per cent last year, dropping from 2,296 cases in 2024 to 1,848, driven largely by a 24.3 per cent reduction in property crime, from 1,873 cases to 1,418. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the property crime category saw fewer thefts (down from 732 to 647) and a sharp 39.7 per cent drop in vehicle theft (from 68 to 41 cases).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, during a monthly assembly at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters, Mohd Yusoff noted that violent crime remains a serious concern despite a slight increase of 1.7 per cent, from 423 cases to 430. He highlighted that murder cases rose from four in 2024 to seven in 2025, while robbery without firearms increased by 25 per cent with 60 cases reported.
The police chief reported 27,339 narcotics cases with 28,807 arrests last year. The street value of seized drugs fell sharply by 60 per cent, from RM73.52 million in 2024 to RM29.56 million. Mohd Yusoff also raised concerns about a significant rise in commercial crime last year, involving phone scams, e-commerce fraud, non-existent loans, online investments, and fake part-time job offers, with figures nearly doubling from 1,095 to 2,010. Despite the increase in cases, total financial losses fell to RM50.09 million.
In other developments, state authorities will resume the demolition of 71 remaining illegal jetties along Sungai Golok near the Malaysia-Thailand border on Sunday, aiming for completion by March. Mohd Yusoff explained that the operation would target remaining structures following the initial demolition phase, with efforts starting from the waterway due to challenging geography and narrow land access. There are 223 illegal jetties from Tumpat to Jeli, with 216 on government land and seven on private property.
Regarding a recent accident in Bachok, where a four-year-old girl was seriously injured by a Fire and Rescue Department MPV, Mohd Yusoff confirmed that police have received three reports and will summon all relevant individuals for investigation. The incident occurred on Jan 3 at approximately 10.45 am during a department Family Day event. The girl, Nurul Afia Raisha Muhamad Shamsul, sustained severe abdominal injuries and fractures and is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian. A comprehensive investigation is in progress under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
