TUMPAT: The Kelantan government has incurred losses exceeding RM30 million following the first wave of floods that struck the region at the end of November, according to State Education, Higher Education, Green Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Wan Roslan Wan Hamat. This initial estimate accounts for damage to property and infrastructure, notably affecting schools under the Kelantan Islamic Foundation (YIK).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wan Roslan reported that approximately six or seven schools affiliated with YIK experienced flood-related damages. He noted that the total losses might rise as data collection from various agencies involved in managing the disaster is still underway. The statement was made during a ceremony for the Acceptance and Disbursement of Aid program by Felda Global Ventures (FGV) Holding Berhad at Pantai Sri Tujoh.
In addition to infrastructure damage, the floods also impacted 207 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates from YIK. These students were relocated
to unaffected nearby schools to sit for their examinations, as organized by the State Education Department (JPN) and YIK. Wan Roslan expressed relief that the examinations proceeded smoothly despite the disruption caused by the floods.
In a separate matter, Wan Roslan advised Kelantanese students in Syria to adhere to instructions from the Malaysian embassy. He confirmed reports from Wisma Putra that these students are safe amidst ongoing concerns in the region.
