Federal Government Sets Sights on Labuan as Economic Hub

LABUAN: The federal government is taking decisive steps to accelerate Labuan’s economic development, with a strategic focus on transforming the island into a thriving economic hub, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr. Zaliha Mustafa. The initiative aims to elevate Labuan’s status to be on par with other developing states, with tourism identified as a principal driver of growth.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Zaliha announced that the government has allocated RM1 million to enhance infrastructure and tourism offerings, marking a significant investment in the island’s future. The initiative includes upgrading existing tourism products and programs, such as the Labuan International Sea Challenge (LISC), which is expected to attract a substantial number of international visitors. Additionally, the introduction of new events like the Borneo Floral Festival (BFF), scheduled for next July, is aimed at diversifying Labuan’s tourism portfolio.

ed specific projects, including the reconstruction of the jetty at Rusukan Besar Island and improvements to the Labuan Bird Park, as part of the broader strategy to boost the island’s appeal to tourists. She emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between the government, local communities, the media, and non-governmental organizations in driving these economic revitalization efforts.

The minister stressed that the transformation of Labuan’s economy requires a well-structured approach, with adequate time for planning and execution. The government remains committed to expediting development projects where possible, ensuring the timely implementation of initiatives designed to enhance the wellbeing of Labuan’s residents and stimulate economic growth.
