Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf) has set an initial target of three gold medals at the Deaflympics, which will be held in Tokyo, Japan in November. Its president, Dr. Ong Shin Ruenn, stated that this target is considered realistic based on the recent achievements of the national contingent at the 2025 Southeast Asian (SEA) Deaf Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, in the previous edition of the Deaflympics, Malaysia secured two gold medals in badminton and bowling. Dr. Ong expressed hope that this year, the team could add a third gold medal, potentially in athletics. His comments were made upon returning from the SEA Deaf Games at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
For the record, at the Jakarta edition, the Malaysian national contingent excelled by finishing as overall champions, securing 25 gold, 16 silver, and 11 bronze medals. The 25 gold medals were distributed across various sports, with 10 from athletics, eight from bowling, five from chess, and two from badminton.
Dr. Ong emphasized that his team is focused on preparing the country’s athletes for the Deaflympics. He also mentioned that MSDeaf will collaborate with local authorities in Japan to ensure the smooth management of the Malaysian contingent’s affairs throughout the games.
