World Needs Shift from Power Rivalry, Says PM Anwar

Tokyo: The world cannot remain trapped in an outdated framework that views international relations solely through the lens of power rivalry and narrow self-interest, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He highlighted the global community's challenges, including prolonged conflicts, intensifying competition among major powers, increasingly fragile supply chains, and widening economic uncertainty.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that Asia's growth has been driven by openness, trade, investment, and cooperation. He acknowledged that the existing international order and institutions have played a role in lifting millions out of poverty. However, he stressed the importance of reforming and strengthening these frameworks to ensure their relevance in an era of rapid change.

Anwar made these remarks during his keynote address titled 'Navigating Strategic Uncertainty' at the Nikkei Forum: Future of Asia in Tokyo. He focused on the major challenges reshaping the global geopolitical and geo-economic landscape. The Prime Minister noted that while middle powers may not have the same influence as major powers, they can serve as bridges of understanding, foster consensus, and promote cooperation in a divided world.

He asserted that Malaysia believes middle powers have a significant responsibility in advancing these efforts. Additionally, Anwar highlighted ASEAN's role in remaining relevant in a fragmented world by championing inclusivity, dialogue, and cooperation.

Anwar also underscored the close relationship between Malaysia and Japan, emphasizing their collaboration in semiconductors, energy transition, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence. These efforts aim to build more resilient supply chains and shared prosperity.
