IPOH: The tabling of the Urban Renewal Bill in Parliament in March 2025 is intended to ensure that urban development is conducted systematically, following specifications set by authorities, according to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He emphasized the necessity of these changes to prevent potential infrastructure issues that could disrupt lives.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nga highlighted concerns about outdated infrastructure, specifically mentioning old buildings constructed before independence and drainage issues in several areas. He warned that without legislative changes, more serious problems could emerge, affecting people’s lives. Nga made these remarks after visiting flood victims at Arena Kepayang Putra.
Nga also mentioned that on August 2, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) planned to table the Urban Renewal Bill, draft the Residential Tenancy Bill, and amend existing legislation such as the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Act, the Fire Serv
ices Act, the Local Government Act, and the Town and Country Planning Act before the upcoming 16th General Election.
In the wake of a recent flash flood at Arena Kepayang Putra, Nga stated that 174 out of 255 affected families would soon receive a total of RM174,000 in emergency aid. Each family will receive RM1,000, credited directly to their accounts through the relevant agency. He urged the remaining 81 families to complete assistance forms to expedite aid distribution.
Nga cautioned the public, particularly flood victims at Arena Kepayang Putra, to stay alert as continuous rain is forecasted from December 8 to December 14 by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). He advised residents to safeguard their valuables in anticipation of a potential second wave of floods.
Earlier, Nga, also serving as the Kepayang assemblyman, was reported to have announced that the KPKT has sanctioned an allocation of RM108.5 million for flood mitigation projects in Sungai Kinta and Kampar. These projects aim
to prevent future flooding at Arena Kepayang Putra near Fair Park.
