UniMAP Advances Plans for New Faculty with AI Focus.

ARAU: Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is in the process of establishing a Science and Computing Faculty, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) as well as computing and science technology. Its vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman Sauli, announced that the AI Data Science Studies Programme is currently undergoing approval by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and aims to welcome its first batch of students in the October 2025/2026 intake.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, AI elements have been thoroughly incorporated into UniMAP’s latest learning curriculum. These elements are reflected in final-year projects, many of which are developed through strategic collaborations with industry partners. Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman discussed these advancements during the AI Summer Camp University Tour – Northern Zone 2024 closing ceremony, officiated by the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, at the UniMAP Puah Putra Campus. The event was also graced by the presence of the Raja Puan Mud
a of Perlis Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.

Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Higher Education Minister’s vision to empower AI technology. The establishment of the faculty is expected to bolster the Electrical and Electronics (EandE) field at UniMAP, which is increasingly integrating AI technologies such as automation and machine learning in manufacturing processes.

Additionally, Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman expressed hope that the AI summer camp would cultivate new talents in AI and the broader fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This is vital for fostering critical and creative thinking in a technology-driven world. “As we know, this programme is to introduce the basic concepts of AI to students as well as to encourage interest in the STEM field… AI is not just the technology of today, but it is the future,” he stated.

He further highlighted UniMAP’s commitment to becoming a leader in producing a competitive industrial workf
orce. This is supported by data from the Kulim Hi-Tech Park Corporation (KHTP), which identifies UniMAP as the largest talent contributor with 3,208 graduates ready to work in Kulim Hi-Tech Park.
