Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Unconditional Ceasefire Amid Intense Conflict

Kuala Lumpur: Thailand and Cambodia have reached an agreement on an unconditional ceasefire, as announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This development comes after a period of intense conflict between the two nations.

According to Deutsche Welle, the ceasefire was established following mediation talks held in Malaysia. Anwar Ibrahim stated that both countries agreed to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, effective from midnight on July 28, 2025, local time. This agreement follows a significant escalation in violence, resulting in at least 35 fatalities and the displacement of approximately 200,000 individuals, marking the most severe conflict between the two countries in over a decade.

The recent escalation saw heavy fighting, including airstrikes and missile attacks, prompting the recall of ambassadors by both nations. Additionally, Thailand closed all border crossings with Cambodia, allowing only Cambodian migrant workers to return home. Anwar Ibrahim proposed ceasefire talks shortly after the long-standing border dispute erupted into open conflict.

Support for the ceasefire and mediation efforts was also expressed by China and the United States. Notably, on Saturday, US President Donald Trump engaged in discussions with both leaders, warning of potential trade deal consequences if the hostilities persisted. As the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Anwar highlighted the mutual understanding reached by acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to take measures toward restoring normalcy.

Both leaders conveyed their commitment to the ceasefire and the restoration of peace and security. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the significance of the agreement as a foundational step for future bilateral discussions to normalize relations. His Thai counterpart expressed confidence that the ceasefire would be executed successfully and in good faith by both sides.
