Syed Yazid Not Vying For FAM President Post

Kuala Lumpur: Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) president Syed Yazid Syed Omar has announced that he would not be contesting for the FAM president position. Syed Yazid stated that his decision came after discussions with KLFA patron Fahmi Fadzil.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Syed Yazid has instead decided to contest for the vice-president position at the upcoming Election Congress on February 15. Despite stepping away from the presidential race, he expressed his full support for FAM vice-president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub to become the next leader of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

In a video recording shared with the media, Syed Yazid remarked, “I am offering myself to contest for FAM vice-president, at the same time, I on behalf of KLFA fully support Datuk Mohd Joehari to contest for the FAM president post.” He emphasized his lack of ambition to run for the president position, hoping instead to be nominated as vice-president.

The FAM Election Congress is scheduled to take place next month to elect new members for the FAM Executive Committee (Exco) as the current term from 2021-2025 concludes. Current president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin has confirmed he will not be defending his position, paving the way for new leadership.

The list of candidates vying for positions in FAM for the 2025-2029 term will soon be revealed. The FAM statute allows any individual to contest for the presidency, provided they secure a minimum of six nominations from affiliated members. Previously, former FAM deputy president Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah and corporate figure Sayf Ismail had expressed interest in the presidency. Meanwhile, Mohd Joehari is reportedly the favored candidate to succeed Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin.
