Sultan Nazrin Cautions Against Slander and Social Media Hostility

Kuala lumpur: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has issued a reminder about the increasing spread of slander and hatred on social media, highlighting its divisive impact on the ummah. He emphasized that the community is frequently exposed to derogatory and mocking language directed at differing opinions, which contradicts Muslim etiquette and Malay traditions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sultan Nazrin stressed the unchecked potential for harm posed by words and typed messages in the absence of piety. His remarks were made during the State-level Maulidur Rasul 1447H Celebration, where Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad was also in attendance. Sultan Nazrin underscored the current challenge for the ummah to pursue unity through the spirit of ukhuwah, grounded in harmony.

He noted that political, ideological, and racial disputes have generated polemics within the community. Sultan Nazrin reminded that the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prohibit mockery, offensive labeling, suspicion, gossip, slander, and judgments made without proper inquiry. He warned that a disregard for manners and customs, along with religious injunctions, could lead to division, distortion of religious values, neglect of traditions, and misguided beliefs among the younger generation.

Sultan Nazrin also highlighted the importance of educating the younger generation about the harsh realities of colonialism and the struggle for independence. He pointed out that the generational distance from independence makes it difficult for the youth to grasp the implications of colonization, freedom, and unity among diverse racial and religious groups.

He emphasized that past agreements should not be taken lightly or questioned, especially amid eroding mutual trust and respect, exacerbated by political rhetoric exploiting racial and religious issues. Sultan Nazrin called for renewed efforts to revive nation-building principles based on the wisdom and spirit exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

He urged Malaysians from all racial, religious, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds to embrace moderation and tolerance. This approach, he explained, is crucial for fostering mutual understanding and respect while respecting boundaries that safeguard religious and ethnic sensitivities.
