Kuala terengganu: The traditional activity of candat sotong, or squid jigging, has gained renewed attention as it is being promoted as a strategic tourism product through the Development Programme associated with the MADANI Rakyat 2025 Candat Sotong X Carnival. Tourism Malaysia Domestic and Events senior director Rafidah Idris highlighted that the inaugural carnival marks an initial effort to elevate this maritime activity into a high-impact tourism attraction for both domestic and international visitors.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, squid jigging is being positioned not only as a seafood-catching activity but also as a cultural experience that showcases the local fishing community’s lifestyle on a global stage. Rafidah Idris pointed out that it offers a comprehensive tourism experience, engaging all senses from the tranquility of the sea and the taste of fresh seafood to authentic interactions with the local community. The launch of the carnival was officiated by Yong Ee Chin, the Undersecretary of the Tourism Policy and International Affairs Division of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, at Payang Walk.
Tourism Malaysia sees significant potential in promoting squid jigging as a unique tourism icon for the country, particularly along the East Coast. Last year, the activity attracted over 30,000 visitors, contributing more than RM7.5 million to the local economy. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the community-based program in enhancing the rural tourism sector, with the squid jigging experience in Terengganu being one of the state’s top tourism products.
Rafidah emphasized the readiness to collaborate with the state government and other relevant parties to enhance promotion efforts and transform the carnival into a large-scale annual event. Tourism Malaysia is also working on developing a holistic tourism package that extends beyond sea activities to include homestay accommodations, Terengganu culinary experiences, cultural performances, and tours exploring Islamic heritage and local history. The aim is to allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the essence of Terengganu, with sustainability as a primary focus in the product development.
The presence of industry players and media at the carnival is seen as initiating a fresh approach to promoting authentic, inclusive, and sustainable community tourism. Squid jigging, a tradition of the Terengganu fishing community, typically takes place between May and August each year.
