Kuala lumpur: The composure of South Korean world number one men's doubles pair, Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae, proved decisive as they defeated Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to claim the Malaysia Open title in 2026, held at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Aaron Chia commented on the pivotal moments of the match, noting that Won Ho and Seung Jae, the top seeds for the 2026 season-opening tournament, maintained their calm during crucial points in the deciding set. This composure prevented the Malaysian pair from ending a 12-year wait for a men's doubles title at the Malaysia Open.
Aaron expressed his disappointment at missing the opportunity to win the prestigious tournament on home soil, marking the seventh time they have finished as runners-up in a Super 1000 event. He acknowledged the minimal difference between the pairs, attributing their loss to the South Koreans' calm demeanor when it mattered most.
Despite the setback, Wooi Yik found positives in the outcome, viewing it as a strong start to the season. He emphasized the importance of maintaining their current consistency to achieve further success for Malaysia in upcoming competitions. Wooi Yik remains determined to secure a Super 1000 title, despite seven unsuccessful attempts, by continuing to deliver consistent performances.
The South Korean pair clinched their second consecutive Malaysia Open title after overcoming a tough challenge from Aaron and Wooi Yik with scores of 21-15, 12-21, 21-18, in a match lasting 66 minutes. As champions, Won Ho and Seung Jae received a cash prize of USD107,300 (RM439,232), while the Malaysian pair earned USD50,750 (RM207,745) as runners-up.
The last time Malaysia celebrated a victory in the men's doubles at the Malaysia Open was in 2014, with the triumph of Goh V Shem and Lim Khim Wah.
