Shift Work Exemption Highlights Commitment to Healthcare Workers’ Welfare

Kuala lumpur: Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad has lauded the government’s decision to exempt five critical service schemes under the Ministry of Health (MOH) from a proposed 45-hour work week, allowing these workers to retain their current 42-hour schedule.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this exemption comes as a gesture of appreciation to healthcare workers, recognizing their physical, mental, and emotional contributions. In his statement, Dr Dzulkefly expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, noting that the decision aligns with the MADANI Government’s commitment to valuing healthcare professionals’ sacrifices.

Dr Dzulkefly emphasized that maintaining the 42-hour work week for these critical service schemes underscores the dedication of healthcare workers who tirelessly support patients around the clock. He acknowledged that this outcome was achieved through extensive collaboration among various parties, including the Public Service Department (PSD), relevant unions and associations, and the Nursing and Human Resources Divisions of the MOH.

The Health Minister highlighted this decision as indicative of the spirit of teamwork and a whole-of-nation approach in addressing healthcare challenges. He expressed optimism for future positive developments within the ministry, in line with ongoing health reform strategies.

The government’s decision affects 82,637 healthcare personnel, including social nurses, medical officers in the emergency department, assistant medical officers, and healthcare assistants. The PSD noted that the decision was made after considering healthcare workers’ concerns regarding the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) implementation.
