Selangor to Implement Circular Economy Framework Within Two Years

Selangor: Selangor is expected to implement a circular economy framework within the next two years, says Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. He mentioned that pilot projects, including the SelKitar initiative and an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling programme, are already underway to instil circular economy practices among the public.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amirudin emphasized the gradual development of a comprehensive ecosystem, noting that the effort is not merely about earning money from recycling but establishing a functioning system. He shared these insights with reporters during the launch of the ‘Plastic-Free Campaign 2025: Series 2’.

Amirudin stated that the circular economy initiatives are likely to first take root in urban areas such as Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, and Shah Alam due to their suitable infrastructure and lifestyles. The circular economy model focuses on reducing waste by reusing, recycling, upcycling, and repurposing materials, which helps in resource preservation, emission reduction, and adding economic value.

In August 2024, the Housing and Local Government Ministry introduced the Solid Waste Circular Economy Action Plan 2025-2035. This plan aims to guide stakeholders through the transition by focusing on governance and legislation, guidelines and procedures, digitalisation and technology, infrastructure and facilities, and market development.

Meanwhile, Amirudin also mentioned that Selangor is in the process of finalizing bylaw amendments across 12 local councils to extend the ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ policy. He indicated that all councils would receive briefings before the amendments are presented at the upcoming State Legislative Assembly session.
