Selangor JKR Identifies 102 Schools for New Classroom Construction

Selangor: A total of 102 schools across Selangor have been identified for the construction of new classrooms in preparation for the expected increase in Year One student enrolment for the next academic session. Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) director Shukri Ishak said the move is aimed at addressing overcrowding in schools while ensuring a more conducive and comfortable learning environment for students.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shukri stated that the state JKR has received allocations covering 102 schools for programmes under the Ministry of Education (MOE) involving preparations for next year's student intake. To date, 41 tender notices have been issued. The department targets the completion of all additional classrooms in high-density schools before the end of this year to comply with the MOE's schedule. Shukri made these remarks at a press conference following the opening ceremony of the new Selangor JKR headquarters complex in Section 17, officiated by the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

The complex, constructed at a cost of RM36 million, serves as a new landmark aimed at strengthening the delivery of public infrastructure in the state. It is equipped with facilities such as a computer laboratory and a solar-covered parking area. Shukri highlighted the department's emphasis on solar energy to reduce carbon footprint and operating costs. The solar technology used at the complex's parking area resulted in significant savings, with a recorded reduction in utility bills of RM128,000 in 2025. The Ministry of Economy allocated RM1.37 million for the solar system, enabling a 45 per cent reduction in the department's monthly electricity bill.

Plans are underway to expand solar panel installation to four more district offices this year, out of a total of nine, with anticipated annual savings of up to RM500,000 in electricity costs. Additionally, Shukri mentioned that the department is managing 101 development projects worth RM2.69 billion, comprising 70 federal projects and 31 state government projects.
