LUNDU: Sarawak will build 10 hectares of greenhouses as the start of developing the Opar Metropolitan Food Cluster (MFC) pilot project, which is expected to be completed in 2026, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He stated that this effort, in collaboration with the Dutch government, will be equipped with advanced technology aimed at modernizing agriculture to increase crop yield for export.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Metropolitan Food Cluster (MFC) will include food produce such as high-value vegetables and livestock, including animal husbandry. The initial 10 hectares will take 18 months to develop. This smart technology will be jointly managed in Sarawak and the Netherlands, allowing the Dutch to monitor and address any technological challenges that may arise.
Abang Johari noted that the initiative involves a state allocation of approximately RM60 million for infrastructure, while the private sector will invest RM20 million for materials and technology. He encouraged smallho
lders in Lundu and graduates to seize the opportunity to engage in modern agriculture and consider it as a career.
The pilot project will cover an area of approximately 80 hectares in total. If successful, the initiative will be expanded to other areas in the state. Abang Johari emphasized that successful smallholders could become significant partners in the project, with the potential to market agricultural products outside Malaysia, including in Singapore.
