Sarawak Needs Highly Skilled, Innovative Workforce To Avoid Middle Income Trap – Abang Jo

Kuching: Sarawak needs a highly skilled and innovative workforce to drive its economy forward and avoid the middle-income trap. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized the importance of investing in education and skills development to achieve this goal.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari stated, “We (Sarawak) do not want to be trapped in a middle-income economy; we must move forward. To do so, we need the right skills and tools (technology) to progress.we must also be innovative.” He highlighted the necessity for the workforce to possess in-demand skills that command high wages, announcing the implementation of programs to train the workforce in line with current trends, particularly in technical, scientific, and financial disciplines.

The Premier made these remarks during his speech at the launch of the Graduates Enhancement Training Sarawak – Work Readiness Programme (GETS-WRP). This initiative is a 12-month on-the-job training programme designed to help graduates, especially those from Sarawak, acquire practical skills across various industries. The programme aims to equip Sarawakian graduates with the necessary skills, knowledge, and work experience to transition successfully into the workforce.

With a total budget of RM23 million allocated for 1,000 interns and graduates in 2025, the programme demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to youth development and workforce readiness, preparing graduates for opportunities both locally and globally. Participants in the programme will receive a monthly allowance of RM1,500, further supporting their journey into the professional world.
