Kuching: The Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development is spearheading the formulation of a comprehensive Sarawak Port Master Plan aimed at providing strategic guidance for port development across the state. This initiative aligns with the cluster growth policy targeting the northern, central, and southern regions.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Deputy Minister, Datuk Majang Renggi, announced that a port advisor and a dedicated task force have been appointed to lead the master plan’s development. Their responsibilities include gathering input from key stakeholders and benchmarking against international standards to ensure that the state ports are strategically positioned for long-term economic growth and enhanced regional competitiveness.
During a Sarawak Assembly sitting, Majang responded to a query from Johnny Pang Leong Ming (GPS-Tanjong Batu) by emphasizing that the master plan will detail strategic initiatives and development priorities. It will align with the forthcoming Sarawak Port Authority’s roles, aiming to streamline port governance by consolidating existing port authorities’ functions under a centralized entity.
The ministry plans to engage closely with state agencies, existing port authorities, terminal operators, and industry players. This collaboration is intended to ensure that the master plan addresses the unique role and requirements of each port. Additionally, this engagement, coupled with data analysis and site assessments, will help tailor development strategies that are both locally responsive and regionally competitive.
In response to a supplementary question from Pang, Majang highlighted that the proposed new Sarawak Port Authority (SARPA) will serve as the central regulatory body for all state ports. This follows the passing of the Sarawak Ports Authority Bill, 2024, which aims to replace the current individual port authorities.
Majang further elaborated that SARPA will assume ownership of the Sarawak Port Master Plan, with responsibilities for policymaking, regulation, and harmonizing development efforts. The goal is to ensure consistent governance and efficiency while aligning with Sarawak’s long-term economic objectives.
