Rising Concern Over Overweight And Obesity Among Terengganu Teens

Kuala terengganu: State Health director Datuk Dr Kasemani Embong has raised concerns about the weight issues among teenagers in Terengganu. Of the 13,613 teenagers who underwent health screenings last year, 664 were found to be obese, 1,689 were overweight, while 1,697 were underweight.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, dietary habits have been identified as a contributing factor to these weight issues, particularly the excessive intake of sugary and fatty drinks beyond recommended levels. In response, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has introduced the Healthy Meals in School Programme (HiTS), which, as of June this year, has been implemented in 18 schools across Terengganu.

Dr Kasemani also highlighted the rising prevalence of vaping among teenagers aged 13 to 17 in the state, which increased to 16.1 per cent in 2022 from 9.2 per cent in 2017. Meanwhile, the number of teenage cigarette smokers has declined to 5.8 per cent in 2022 from 15 per cent in 2017.

Mental health issues, including depression among teenagers, are also a significant concern and require attention from all parties involved. To address these issues, the Terengganu Health Department (JKNT) has developed a Strategic Plan for Adolescent Health 2026-2030. This plan focuses on strengthening facilities, promoting health, and fostering cooperation among relevant agencies.

Additionally, to enhance youth engagement, nine health clinics in Terengganu have been recognised as Best Practice sites for adolescent-friendly health services (PKMR).
