Gurun: The investigation report into the grenade explosion that claimed the lives of two military personnel during a training exercise at Hobart Camp in Gurun last month is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Defence by the middle of this month. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin stated that the report is being finalized before being submitted for further action.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Defence Minister shared that he has been informed about the report's imminent submission and assured that updates will be provided, saying, "Insya-Allah, I will update you on it." This statement was made to reporters after Mohamed Khaled attended the 'Ilmu dan Muafakat' (PIKAT) program at Felda Air Tawar 2.
He mentioned that the Malaysian Army has been directed to review its training approach, particularly in light of the second incident at the same camp. "We need to determine whether there were any other shortcomings or weaknesses. We will only make a decision after receiving the findings of the investigations," he added.
The tragic incident occurred on June 16, at approximately 10:57 am, involving Corporal Norazmi Abu Bakar of the Sixth Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD), and Private Siti Khadijah Sungip of the First Squadron, Royal Engineers Regiment (RAJD). Both sustained severe injuries in the explosion during the training exercise.
Unfortunately, both personnel were pronounced dead while being transported to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for further treatment.
Adding to the camp's woes, another incident unfolded on June 29, when a firearm discharged during a combat enhancement training (LPT) exercise, injuring two military personnel. Sergeant Mohamad Firdaus Che Shaharudin and Corporal Felix Franchis of the Fourth Battalion, Royal Ranger Regiment (4 RRD), suffered leg injuries from shrapnel in the 6:15 pm incident.
