Kuala lumpur: Persatuan Perpaduan Rakan Penghantar Malaysia (PPRPM) has voiced strong support for the tabling of the Gig Workers Bill 2025 in Parliament last Monday.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, PPRPM stated that reports claiming several associations opposed the bill were inaccurate, emphasizing that the primary concern was the improvement of gig workers’ wages. The association highlighted that the bill represents a significant step in safeguarding the welfare and well-being of gig workers.
PPRPM described the bill as beneficial, particularly for delivery riders who face constant risks on the road. The association noted that if the bill is passed, it would make social protection mandatory and easier to enforce through a ‘postpaid’ contribution system, which would cover workers before payment is made.
The contribution rate proposed in the bill is RM0.0125 per RM1 of income, which PPRPM considers affordable and advantageous for delivery riders. Additionally, the bill aims to ensure income rights by establishing a formal tripartite council that allows employees and employers to jointly set payment rates and prohibits arbitrary deductions by employers.
PPRPM also highlighted the introduction of a dispute resolution mechanism through the formation of a Gig Workers Tribunal, which addresses previous gaps in industrial disputes. The bill provides a clear definition of gig workers, not previously included in the Employment Act 1955, ensuring basic labor protection.
The association urged the approval of the bill and suggested further amendments, including a transparent user system to show calculation and payment methods for each trip, through additional regulations. PPRPM emphasized that the bill not only protects workers’ rights but also promotes best labor management practices and enhances company credibility.
The bill, tabled by the Ministry of Human Resources, includes four key components: the definition of gig workers, dispute resolution mechanisms, payment rate issues, and social security.
