Kuala lumpur: The country’s top women’s doubles badminton pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, will continue representing Malaysia on the international stage after signing a new contract with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). This agreement ensures their participation until the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, BAM President Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz confirmed the contract signing but did not disclose specific details of the agreement between BAM and the world number three pair. It is reported that the contract was finalized at 6:31 pm, though the exact date was not shared with the public.
During a press conference at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara, Tengku Zafrul stated, “I would like to inform and announce that BAM and our national women’s doubles pair, Thinaah and Pearly, have reached an agreement regarding their contract issue.” He emphasized the constructive discussions that led to this agreement, expressing gratitude towards the athletes for their commitment.
Previously, reports indicated that Pearly and Thinaah had not yet renewed their contract with BAM following its expiration in December last year. While Tengku Zafrul did not address speculation about an RM1 million annual payment package for each player, he highlighted the importance of rewarding exceptional performance.
Thinaah expressed her appreciation for Tengku Zafrul’s support, clarifying that the delay in contract finalization was due to their busy tournament schedule. Pearly echoed her partner’s sentiments, noting that the new contract allows them to focus on major upcoming tournaments, including the Japan Open and China Open 2025.
