Pahang Police Refute Allegations of Drug Cartel Activity in Genting Highlands

Pahang: Pahang police have firmly dismissed circulating claims on social media suggesting that a large-scale drug cartel is operating in Genting Highlands, Bentong, without enforcement intervention. Acting Pahang police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob has stated that police will investigate and take necessary measures if any illegal activities are detected.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azry Akmar emphasized that if a police report involving illegal activity is lodged, authorities will promptly investigate and take appropriate action, irrespective of the location. He addressed the media during a press conference at the Pahang Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) today.

The press event coincided with the handover of duties for the Pahang Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) chief post, transitioning from ACP Muhammed Rizal Kamarudin to SAC Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahar. The allegations surfaced from a recent post on Threads, where a social media user claimed the existence of a drug cartel in the tourist hotspot, asserting that no action had been taken despite lodged police reports.

In an unrelated incident, Azry Akmar also provided updates on the tanker accident near Kampung Lebak last Friday, which resulted in two fatalities. The driver involved is to be remanded until tomorrow, with the investigation paper scheduled to be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office for further action. The driver, aged 37, faces investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Identities of the victims, confirmed through DNA testing, were Nur Fatima Abdullah, 39, and her son, Muhamad Fattah Aisy Nuafal Saifulnizam, 12. The tragic incident occurred when their vehicle was struck by a tanker carrying 32,000 litres of diesel and petrol, leading to a fire, while the driver sustained minor injuries.
