Nationwide Vape Ban Urged Amid Rising Health Concerns for Youths

Kuala Lumpur: A nationwide ban on vape products is urgently needed to address rising health risks and drug-related abuse among youths, says Chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, police data indicates a 32 percent increase in the seizure of drug-laced vape liquids, with the Health Ministry revealing that 65.6 percent of vape liquids seized over the past two years contained dangerous drugs. “Current regulations are clearly not working. They’re being ignored, and the only effective way forward is a complete federal ban, even if it is phased in over time,” Lee said in a statement.

Lee highlighted that some states have already banned vape sales, but the inconsistency in regulations across different states makes it challenging to tackle the issue effectively. As immediate steps, he suggested raising the minimum purchasing age and enhancing enforcement measures, which include rigorous age verification, imposing heavy penalties for underage sales, and launching intensified public education campaigns in schools and communities.

He emphasized the severe health risks vaping poses to young individuals, stating that nicotine is highly addictive and particularly harmful to youths as it impairs brain development, affecting learning, memory, and attention. The aerosol produced by vaping also irritates the lungs, leading to respiratory issues.

Lee pointed out that many vape products are not thoroughly tested, exposing users to potentially harmful chemicals such as heavy metals and carcinogens. He also cited research linking teen vaping to subsequent cigarette smoking, underscoring the necessity of urgent action given the addictive nature of nicotine and the potential for drug exposure.

“We should avoid being judgmental. Instead, we need to engage youths, understand their reasons for vaping, and highlight the health benefits of quitting,” he noted. Lee also urged schools to organize talks, awareness campaigns, and provide healthy alternatives such as sports, scouting, and debates, with positive peer pressure playing a critical role in prevention.
