Subang: The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) has put forward a proposal for the establishment of the Utusan Melayu Journalism Academic Chair at local universities. This initiative aims to enhance research and understanding of Malaysia’s journalistic history, with a particular focus on the significant contributions made by the country’s oldest newspaper.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail emphasized that the academic chair is intended not only to document the legacy of Utusan Melayu but also to integrate its research findings into journalism curricula at higher education institutions. He highlighted the newspaper’s role in chronicling key moments in Malaysia’s history, underscoring the importance of preserving this documentation at the university level.
Ainol Amriz expressed these views during the Kenangan Utusan Melayu Forum held at Subang Parade, an event organized to commemorate the 86th anniversary of Utusan Melayu and National Journalists Day (HAWANA). The forum was inaugurated by veteran journalist Tan Sri Johan Jaafar.
MPI is also urging journalists to document their experiences and the various struggles, economic history, and language issues once championed by Utusan Melayu, through the e-journal platform recently launched by the institute.
Veteran journalist Johan Jaafar remarked that Utusan Melayu has secured its place in history, having endured from the 1930s into the 21st century. He noted that the newspaper represents not only the history of journalism but also the broader history of the nation and the influential figures who shaped Malaysia’s media landscape. Johan highlighted Utusan Melayu’s success in capturing pivotal issues and events that have contributed to Malaysia’s nation-building journey from the pre-war era to post-independence.
