SAR Operations Rescued 1,259 Victims Nationwide Last Year: MMEA

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) successfully conducted 226 search and rescue (SAR) operations last year, which involved a total of 1,348 victims across the nation. Out of these, 1,259 individuals were rescued, while 64 were reported dead, and 25 remain classified as missing.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kelantan Maritime director, Captain Erwan Shah Soahdi, highlighted the effectiveness and preparedness of MMEA’s assets in handling emergency maritime operations, as demonstrated by the statistics. He spoke during a press conference at the Kelantan Maritime headquarters, coinciding with the 2025 Maritime Awareness and Safety Day celebration.

Captain Erwan emphasized the importance of the Maritime Awareness and Safety Day, which aims to educate maritime communities such as fishermen, tourists, and ocean operators about safety measures at sea. He assured that MMEA maintains at least one asset in readiness in each state and maritime zone, ensuring quick deployment upon receiving an emergency report.

Additionally, Captain Erwan mentioned that Maritime Malaysia is enhancing its sea safety awareness initiatives this year. The agency is conducting community talks, social media campaigns, distributing leaflets, organizing dialogue sessions, safety exhibitions, and participating in electronic media interviews. These efforts are pivotal in reducing the risk of loss of life and fostering a stronger bond between enforcement agencies and coastal communities.
