Monsoon Surge: Heavy, Continuous Rain Expected In Eastern, Southern Peninsula Starting This Thursday

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of heavy and continuous rain in the eastern and southern parts of the Peninsula starting this Thursday (Jan 9) until Jan 13.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MetMalaysia director-general Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip stated that the situation is based on an analysis of the latest weather forecast models indicating a strong monsoon surge expected to enter the country’s region during that period. The western part of the Peninsula is also at risk of experiencing continuous rain throughout this time.

Dr. Mohd Hisham noted that the strong monsoon surge would affect the South China Sea, resulting in strong winds and rough seas. This situation poses a danger to all coastal and marine activities, with a rise in sea levels anticipated in the waters of East Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan, raising the risk of seawater overflowing onto the coast.

MetMalaysia is continuously monitoring the weather conditions and will issue further rain warnings as soon as the weather forecast models reach a high level of confidence. The public is advised to stay prepared and keep informed through MetMalaysia’s official distribution channels, including their website, mobile application, and social media platforms.

For additional information and inquiries, the public can contact the MetMalaysia hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
