Nilai: National track cycling champion Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang was moved by the prayer of the Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah who wanted to see him compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28). The 2020 Tokyo Olympics keirin silver medalist, however, said he was not yet ready to make any commitment on the matter.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Azizulhasni expressed a preference for taking a 'step-by-step' approach, focusing on preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. He emphasized the importance of leaving plans to divine will and not over-promising on future commitments.
Mohd Azizulhasni commented on the meaningful support from Al-Sultan Abdullah, who attended the race to watch and encourage the athletes. He noted the significance of such attention for the sport of cycling and expressed hope for its continued growth.
He highlighted the need for cycling in Malaysia to expand, drawing parallels with sports like badminton and football, which have established talent pools and progress. He called for more development in talent, structural support, and the nurturing of junior athletes.
In a recent competition, Mohd Azizulhasni, representing Team Azizul, secured victory in the elite men's sprint final against Johor rider Mohd Akmal Nazimi Jusena, redeeming himself after a silver finish in the keirin event. Meanwhile, the bronze medal was clinched by Johor's Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, who defeated Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis of Selangor.
