Melaka: MIC will defend its solitary seat in the upcoming Melaka state election for now, with the party also weighing a possible increase in the number of constituencies it will contest, its deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the MIC leadership is currently assessing several factors before deciding whether to seek additional seats, including the suitability of the constituencies, the strength of potential candidates, and the prospects of winning. "Any decision on additional seats to be contested by MIC in the Melaka state election has yet to be finalised as the matter is still under consideration by the party leadership," Saravanan told reporters after attending the 2026 Tapah Parliamentary Students Laptop Handover Programme at Dewan Mahatma Gandhi.
The Tapah MP mentioned that party president Tan Sri S A Vigneswaran is currently evaluating potential candidates, with a decision expected soon. He also noted that the party had started its election preparations, focusing on identifying voters, particularly its core supporters, and assessing current issues that could influence the campaign.
"For now, we have started groundwork to identify voters, particularly our core supporters, as well as issues that are currently being addressed or need to be addressed in the near future," he added.
In the 2021 Melaka state election, MIC, which contested under the Barisan Nasional (BN) banner, successfully won the Gadek seat through its candidate VP Shanmugam in a six-cornered contest with a 559-vote majority.
