Melaka: The Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) is set to intensify its enforcement operations against overloaded heavy vehicles, a prevalent offence, according to its director, Muhammad Firdaus Shariff. This initiative aims to mitigate the risks posed to road safety and reduce the potential for fatal accidents caused by such violations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Muhammad Firdaus emphasized the need for targeted enforcement, particularly in areas identified as hotspots for heavy vehicle traffic. The department plans to carry out special operations and launch awareness programs to educate drivers about the dangers associated with overloading.
During a recent operation conducted in conjunction with the Chinese New Year, 2,419 vehicles were inspected on the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin Highway near Melaka Sentral. The four-hour operation, starting at 8 pm, resulted in actions against 267 vehicles for various offences. JPJ issued 323 notices and seized six motorcycles during this period.
The most common violation identified was driving without a valid licence, accounting for 94 offences. This was followed by 88 cases related to the absence of valid road tax and insurance. Additionally, there were 85 technical violations, including non-compliance with vehicle licence plate specifications and issues with side mirrors.
