Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have reiterated their joint commitment to combat the crime of online child sexual exploitation through continuous enforcement and community awareness education.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the two organizations stated in a joint release that a total of 1,501 offensive posts involving children were identified up to June 15, 2025. They reported that 94 percent of these posts were successfully removed due to cooperation with digital platform providers and public complaints.
Additionally, the statement highlighted that special operations, such as “Op Pedo,” led to the arrest of 13 individuals and the seizure of over 40,000 child sexual abuse materials from several states.
The dissemination, storage, or commercialization of child sexual exploitation content is deemed an offense under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588). This offense carries penalties that include a fine of up to RM1 million, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
Furthermore, the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 allows for legal action against those involved in producing, disseminating, buying, selling, sharing, or possessing related materials.
As a preventive measure, MCMC has intensified its Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), focusing on students, parents, and the community. This campaign emphasizes the prohibition of social media accounts for children under 13.
The MCMC and PDRM urged all parties, including parents, educators, and internet users, to collaborate in efforts to curb this crime.
