Malaysia Surpasses Medal Expectations at 2025 ASEAN Para Games in Thailand

Thailand: The Malaysian contingent at the 2025 ASEAN Para Games in Thailand has successfully met and exceeded their medal targets, securing a total of 201 medals, including 64 gold, 64 silver, and 73 bronze. The Games are set to conclude tomorrow, marking a significant achievement for Malaysia's para athletes.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysian team initially aimed for 181 medals with 55 golds. This target was achieved with notable performances, such as para long jumper Wong Kar Gee's record-setting jump of 6.83 metres in the T12 men's long jump event, earning the 55th gold medal. Wheelchair tennis player Mohamad Yusshazwan Yusuf added to the tally by defeating Thailand's Kittiphong Wongcharoen, securing Malaysia's 181st medal in the men's singles final.

The Malaysian contingent's success is attributed to the athletes' consistent performance and the well-structured planning and training programs. These efforts, along with continuous support from various stakeholders, have been instrumental in achieving the impressive medal haul. The medals came from a variety of sports, showcasing the national team's depth and versatility across athletics, para badminton, swimming, and tenpin bowling.

Several athletes also reached personal milestones, including para swimmer Abd Halim Mohammad, who claimed five gold medals and broke two APG records. As the Games draw to a close, Malaysia's third-place finish in the medal standings highlights the country's progress in para sports, laying a strong foundation for future competitions, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games, 2026 Para Asian Games, 2027 APG in Malaysia, and the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, United States.
