Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia will continue to collaborate with other countries in addressing the issue of climate change despite the decision by the United States (US) to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, emphasized the nation’s ongoing commitment to engage with global partners in finding effective solutions to climate change-related challenges.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nik Nazmi highlighted that the topic was discussed during a meeting with US representatives at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). He stated that while the US has made its decision, it is imperative for the global community to act collaboratively. Malaysia intends to maintain its diplomatic relations and continue dialogues with all nations, including the US.
Nik Nazmi, at a media conference following the launch of Malaysia’s Participation Report at UNFCCC-COP29 and the Biennial Transparency Report (BTR), announced that Malaysia is among 85 out of 198 countries that have met their commitments under the Paris Agreement. The country submitted its first BTR to the UNFCCC on December 31 of the previous year, meeting the designated deadline. This national document underscores Malaysia’s goal of achieving a 45 percent reduction in economy-wide greenhouse gas emission intensity by 2030.
Additionally, in his opening remarks, Nik Nazmi expressed Malaysia’s readiness to assume the role of ASEAN Chair for 2025, with a focus on climate action and regional cooperation. He mentioned Malaysia’s recent progress in tackling climate change, positioning the country as a leader within ASEAN and globally.
As the ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia aims to elevate the region’s collective stance on climate action, ensuring alignment with global goals. At the upcoming COP30 in Belem, Brazil, Malaysia plans to present the ASEAN Joint Statement on Climate Change, which will emphasize regional cooperation, financial support, and sustainable development pathways for ASEAN Member States.
