Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to take a firm and united stance in defending international law, with an emphasis on the ongoing crises in Gaza and Myanmar. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan highlighted these situations as tests of ASEAN’s moral responsibility, stressing the need for the bloc to leverage its collective voice to support the oppressed and advocate for solutions grounded in international law.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Hasan emphasized that ASEAN must not remain passive in the face of global injustices. He called on the bloc to take a proactive role in shaping global progress by standing firm on critical issues such as peace, justice, equality, human rights, and the rule of law. During the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Mohamad expressed grave concern over the total siege of Gaza by Israeli forces, which he said is leading to mass starvation and deaths, reflecting indifference and double standards.
Mohamad stated, “ASEAN cannot remain silent. We have a voice in world affairs, and we must use our voice to speak up for the oppressed and offer solutions grounded in principles and international law.” He also highlighted ASEAN’s proactive response to regional crises, referencing the swift action taken following the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand, which demonstrated the bloc’s core values of compassion, unity, and humanitarian spirit.
The Foreign Minister urged stakeholders in Myanmar to cease hostilities and extend the ceasefire to aid recovery and alleviate the suffering of the people. He noted that the tragedy serves as a reminder that crises transcend borders and require collective resolve and solidarity.
As the chair of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Mohamad is leading discussions ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit and related summits, which Malaysia will host at the KLCC from May 26 to 27 under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability.’
