Malaysia and Indonesia to Establish Official Trade Route Between Tebedu and Entikong

Kuching: Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to open an official trade route between Tebedu in southwest Sarawak and Entikong in Kalimantan, marking a significant milestone in strengthening cross-border economic collaboration. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the agreement following a recent bilateral meeting in Jakarta, where he was accompanied by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari highlighted that Tebedu and Entikong would serve as potential trade gateways, with authorities from both nations showing openness to the initiative. During the meeting, President Prabowo expressed support, stating, “Let’s open it for business between Malaysia and Indonesia through Tebedu and Entikong,” indicating the route’s future as a crucial trading point.

Abang Johari made these remarks at the launch of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Community Hostel and its 70th Anniversary Celebration. The event was attended by DBNA adviser Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, and DBNA President Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik. The Premier noted that the trade route could lead to joint collaborations between Sarawak and Indonesia, particularly benefiting the Bidayuh communities along the border.

He further stated that Sarawak is currently supplying electricity to Kalimantan, with Indonesia interested in extending power connectivity from Lubok Antu in Sri Aman to Badau in West Kalimantan. “This requires us to strengthen our energy capacity,” he said, emphasizing the foundation for more profound collaboration within the Asian economic framework.

The development of the Tebedu-Entikong trade route is expected to unlock new opportunities in commerce, energy, and regional cooperation, propelling Malaysia and Indonesia towards a more integrated economy. “Our future economy will be stronger and more competitive, positioning us to play a significant role in the regional high-value economy,” Abang Johari stated.

Additionally, Abang Johari announced an extra RM4 million to complete the community hostel project, raising the total investment to RM20 million, which includes furniture and essential facilities. The nine-storey hostel, worth RM16 million and initiated in 2021, offers accommodation facilities, a gallery, and function rooms, and was completed this year.
