Malaysia Airports Strengthens Network Ahead Of Visit Malaysia 2026

Malaysia: Malaysia Airports has strengthened its network ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) to ensure smooth, reliable, and welcoming arrivals, supported by efficient operations and upgraded facilities across both international and domestic airports. Malaysia Airports Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani emphasized the group's commitment to handling increased traffic volumes while maintaining dependable performance across all airports.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, as the country's gateway operator, Malaysia Airports operates under a coordinated, nationwide framework to maintain consistent service standards at every entry point. The focus is on efficient asset utilization, stable operational processes, and close collaboration with airline partners. These measures aim to support connectivity growth, manage peak flows effectively, and deliver reliable airport operations that meet international expectations at both international gateways and domestic airports.

In 2025, Malaysia Airports initiated targeted upgrades nationwide, with significant modernisation at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) leading the programme. Over 30 improvement initiatives were executed across Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to enhance the passenger journey. These included upgraded passenger processing systems, expanded self-service facilities, refreshed public amenities, and enhanced commercial offerings.

Key upgrades mentioned by Mohd Izani include enhanced check-in and open bag drop kiosks, a vehicle access management system to improve kerbside traffic flow, and the addition of 12,500 new passenger trolleys, 100 complimentary wheelchairs, and 210 baby strollers. Additional enhancements feature family-friendly washrooms, refurbished open-concept waiting lounges, upgraded surau facilities, and the introduction of a 'Calm Room' for Terminal 2 passengers with hidden disabilities.

Recognizing the importance of the VM2026 experience at all entry points, Malaysia Airports accelerated upgrades at other locations, including Penang International Airport, Kota Kinabalu International Airport, and selected domestic gateways. These enhancements encompass the rollout of Self Service Bag Drop, cashless parking systems, escalator upgrades, and surau and washroom refurbishments, ensuring service quality consistency across the network.

As VM2026 progresses, Malaysia Airports continues collaborating with the Transport Ministry, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, and industry stakeholders to align airport operations with national tourism goals. This alignment ensures that every arrival offers a seamless and efficient introduction to the country that reflects global standards and Malaysia's distinctive hospitality.

Mohd Izani also highlighted Malaysia Airports' strengthened airline engagement strategy to support air connectivity growth through incentives for new and expanding routes. These efforts are complemented by Tourism Malaysia's Geran Sepadan Penerbangan dan Charter (GSPC) under Budget 2026, enabling airlines to conduct overseas marketing and promotional activities to drive inbound tourism through scheduled and charter flights.
