Kuala Lumpur: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), specifically its Asnaf Tracking Unit, has been directed to find a female Muslim convert who recently gained widespread attention on social media. The woman expressed her intention to leave Islam, citing a lack of assistance and alleging abuse by her husband.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar emphasized the urgency of extending help to the woman. He noted, “I have watched the viral video and have contacted MAIWP to search for the woman so that we can offer help. At the same time, I believe there is a need to meet her personally to obtain further details, as there are still many unclear matters.” He urged the woman or anyone acquainted with her to reach out to MAIWP for further action and appropriate support.
Addressing the woman’s allegations of being beaten and abandoned by her husband during pregnancy, Mohd Na’im stated that if these claims are valid, she is entitled to seek marriage dissolution under Syariah law. He highlighted the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) teachings on the importance of husbands not oppressing their wives and reiterated the increased responsibility of husbands to guide and care for their wives who convert to Islam through marriage.
Mohd Na’im called on the Muslim community to show compassion towards converts needing support and aid to prevent them from feeling marginalized or losing faith in their religion. He advised mosques, suraus, and Islamic agencies, including MAIWP, to treat converts seeking help with kindness.
He reported that as of May this year, MAIWP had registered 1,098 converts in the Federal Territories, an increase from 968 last year. He also mentioned that RM9.3 million in aid has been disbursed.
Mohd Na’im assured that all agencies under his jurisdiction would assist individuals in need, including converts requiring support, protection, and guidance. He expressed his commitment to preventing overlooked cases from leading to negative perceptions of religious agencies, stating, “We will continue to improve and ensure that those in need receive the help they deserve.”
