Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has completed the latest guidelines for the beauty industry and plans to present the proposal to the Cabinet, as announced by Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh. The guidelines, which have been operational since 2013, have been revised to incorporate enhancements in response to the evolving landscape of the beauty sector.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the updates are a result of engagement sessions with industry stakeholders and collaboration with the Ministry of Health. The initiative aims to safeguard consumers and support an industry that has rapidly expanded, contributing RM13.5 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023.
The revised guidelines address the operation of specific machines, such as laser devices and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), determining whether they should be managed by medical practitioners. This measure seeks to ensure that the regulations align with current developments and provide a professional and ethical framework for industry operators and entrepreneurs.
During a press conference at a beauty centre opening, Fuziah mentioned that since 2023, KPDN has handled only three complaints about skin damage from beauty treatments, alongside complaints about treatment packages. Over 28,000 beauty industry companies have been registered, and KPDN, as the overseeing body of the unregulated services sector, will maintain proactive efforts to foster an organized and competitive industry ecosystem.
