Kura Sushi to Showcase Global Cuisine at Osaka-Kansai Expo

KUALA LUMPUR: Kura Sushi Inc, a prominent conveyor-belt sushi chain, announced plans to introduce a diverse menu featuring 70 iconic dishes representing countries and regions participating in the Osaka-Kansai Expo. Set to open on April 13, 2025, in Yumeshima, Osaka, the restaurant will mark the company’s largest-scale opening with 338 seats and a 135-meter-long revolving belt.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kura Sushi is the only major revolving sushi chain in Japan serving sushi on conveyor belts at all its restaurants. The Expo menu, developed under the theme ‘Revolving Belts Unite the World,’ aims to provide a global dining experience. Executive Vice President Makoto Tanaka expressed the company’s hope to unite visitors through a shared love of global cuisine amidst complex social issues.

The menu, crafted by Kura’s Product Development Division, reflects authentic global flavors and is designed to appeal to both Japanese and international visitors. Kura Sushi collaborated with various embassies to ens
ure the authenticity of 24 dishes. The menu will complement Kura’s popular sushi offerings, providing a unique culinary experience that mirrors the exploration of global food cultures.

In a nod to the Expo’s theme, the antibacterial sushi covers, named ‘Mr. Freshness,’ feature red and blue hands shaking, echoing the event’s signature colors. To generate excitement for the Expo, special Expo menus will be available at about 550 Kura Sushi locations nationwide starting February 7, 2025. Each location will feature a dish from the Expo menu, encouraging customers to explore different global flavors.

Kaitenzushi, or revolving sushi restaurants, gained popularity in Japan following the Osaka Expo in 1970. Over its 50-year history, Kaitenzushi has evolved significantly, now playing a leading role in Japan’s food service industry with sales exceeding 800 billion yen. Kura Sushi, with 547 restaurants in Japan, 70 in the United States, 59 in Taiwan, and three in Shanghai, plans to continue expanding its unique busine
ss model globally.
