Kuching: Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin announced that the Kuching-Pontianak route, set to begin on September 12 with twice-daily operations, will offer increased flexibility and convenience for travelers between the two regions. He emphasized that the launch of these routes signifies a significant achievement in aviation and highlights the deep historical, cultural, and familial connections shared by the people across the border.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sarawak government welcomed the Indonesian government’s decision to reopen Supadio Airport in Pontianak for international flights, marking it as a strategic air link between Kuching and Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan. Lee expressed regret over his inability to attend the launch due to prior commitments but conveyed his support through a pre-recorded video message.
Lee extended apologies for missing the event and congratulated the Sarawak Tourism Board for organizing the Sarawak Travel Fair in Pontianak. He highlighted the importance of the new routes in boosting tourism, trade, education, and social connections, particularly among border communities.
Air Asia Malaysia announced the introduction of two new direct routes linking Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to Pontianak, making it the only airline offering international flights to the West Kalimantan capital. The airline revealed that these routes were launched during the Sarawak Travel Fair, officiated by West Kalimantan Governor Ria Norsan. This expansion reflects Air Asia’s continued growth in Indonesia, following recent route launches within the region.
