KPKT to File Police Reports on MyKiosk Project Fake News Circulation

Kuala Lumpur: The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) will take decisive action by filing police reports and lodging complaints with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in response to the dissemination of videos and false news concerning the MyKiosk project. Minister Nga Kor Ming has directed the Local Government Department (JKT) to identify those responsible for spreading misinformation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nga stated that ministry staff are actively compiling evidence of the circulated false information and emphasized that stern action would be taken against those spreading fake news. He made these remarks during the pre-launch ceremony of the Minister’s Excellence Awards (AKM) and Media Excellence Awards (AKeMedia) 2025.

Nga mentioned plans to file a complaint with the MCMC to enable an investigation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Responding to suggestions for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate the MyKiosk project, Nga expressed his willingness to cooperate should an investigation occur.

Addressing claims that KPKT appointed its own contractors for the MyKiosk installations, Nga clarified that the assertion was false. He explained that all 795 contractors were appointed by 156 local authorities (PBTs) across the country. The ministry’s role is limited to providing funding while the PBTs manage contractor selection, kiosk location, and vendor management.

Regarding concerns over the cost of MyKiosk units, Nga justified the pricing due to enhancements in the MyKiosk 2.0 model, which includes solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and improved materials. The RM25,000 per kiosk is merely a ceiling price set by KPKT, and contractors are expected to offer prices below this threshold.

Nga shared that 87.74% of MyKiosk 1.0 units, amounting to 2,798 units, have been rented. For MyKiosk 2.0, the occupancy rate stands at 65.44%, with 2,653 units rented. The MyKiosk project is designed to support the B40 income group and MSMEs by offering standardized and affordable business spaces.

Additionally, regarding the AKM, Nga announced that the awards, open to KPKT and PBT personnel, offer winners up to RM20,000 in cash, certificates, trophies, and opportunities for short courses at prestigious institutions. The AKeMedia 2025 awards, open to local media practitioners, aim to recognize media contributions in interpreting KPKT’s key initiatives, with submissions closing on September 16.
