Kuala lumpur: The integration plan for Terminals 1 and 2 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will be expedited to ensure seamless connectivity for passengers and baggage between the terminals, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He announced that this initiative aims to enhance the travel experience at KLIA by improving accessibility and operational efficiency.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the plan includes the provision of accessibility amenities such as an airside bus service for passengers and baggage, which will be implemented by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB). Loke has called on airlines to cooperate in executing the plan, emphasizing that the focus should not solely be on competition but on strengthening Malaysia’s standing as a key regional aviation hub.
Loke expressed a desire for the plan to be realized next year, noting that the requests do not demand significant additional infrastructure but rather enhancements to existing systems without large-scale construction. The Transport Minister highlighted the potential involvement of immigration and customs procedures in the plan, with detailed discussions expected to unfold within six to nine months.
He further clarified that the Transport Ministry (MOT) fully supports the integration as part of MAHB’s development and management strategy, dismissing any suggestions of political motivation. Loke stated, “I want to clarify and emphasise here that there is no issue of political will. We are all supportive. As far as MOT is concerned, we fully back the idea of integrating Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.”
In addition to the integration plan, the meeting addressed other actions to resolve issues such as a review of the Green Lane implementation to ease congestion at the Royal Malaysian Customs Department checks at both terminals. Improvements in airport slot management by the National Slot Coordination Malaysia (NSCM) were also discussed, alongside the establishment of a task force for the Baggage Handling System Replacement Project to monitor its progress with regular reporting to MOT.
