HS-WIM System Set to Launch in Q3 2025, Says Loke

Kuala Lumpur: The High Speed-Weigh in Motion (HS-WIM) system, designed to automatically monitor the load of heavy vehicles, is anticipated to commence operations in the third quarter of 2025, announced Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook. He noted that the Ministry of Transport (MOT) has pinpointed 10 strategic locations across the country for the installation of the HS-WIM system.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the master plan for enforcing the HS-WIM system aims to expand its installation in areas with high accident rates and heavy traffic. Loke emphasized the urgency of the implementation, stating that the proof of concept was completed last year, and the installation must begin this year.

The HS-WIM system represents a novel approach to tracking heavy vehicles that exceed weight limits, utilizing camera technology and sensors to automatically detect and record overloaded vehicles. This will replace the current manual method of stopping vehicles and taking them to weighing stations.

Additionally, Loke highlighted improvements to the Automated Awareness Safety System (AwAS) cameras, transitioning from a static to a point-to-point method. This new system will provide more comprehensive speed monitoring by calculating the average speed between two camera checkpoints, rather than monitoring at fixed locations.

The new method is set to be implemented initially in high-risk areas, such as the hilly terrains of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway and Menora Tunnel. Loke explained that the goal is to ensure vehicles, particularly buses, reduce speed on downhill stretches, as static cameras currently encourage drivers to slow down only momentarily.

Loke expressed hopes that the enhanced AwAS system will effectively reduce road accidents and promote better driving discipline nationwide.
