Growing Awareness on Consumer Rights Reflected in Surge of Complaints in Penang

Penang: The Penang office of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) received 183 complaints in less than a month, demonstrating a growing awareness of consumer rights among the public.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ministry’s enforcement director in Penang, S. Jegan, attributed this increase to the agility of enforcement through various operations, including Op Gempur and Op Tiris. These initiatives have been active since the start of the year to address issues like supply leakages of controlled goods.

He revealed that of the 183 complaints received since January 1, 68 pertained to the pricing of goods and services, while 20 were related to the supply of controlled items. Jegan further disclosed that 4,833 premises have been inspected in Penang, resulting in 96 cases for various offences. Goods valued at RM285,683.22 have been seized, and compounds amounting to RM16,000 have been issued.

Jegan emphasized the increasing consumer awareness of their rights and the confidence in KPDN’s ability to take action, prompting more individuals to come forward with complaints. He shared these insights with reporters after overseeing the implementation of the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) at a local supermarket.

He assured that his office treats every complaint with seriousness, committing to resolve them within 14 days. Regarding the SHMMP, Jegan noted that 137 enforcement officers and 62 price monitoring officers have been deployed at strategic locations, including public and farmers’ markets as well as shopping centers, to conduct inspections across the state.
