Kuala lumpur: The government is set to bolster its support for Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) as part of ongoing efforts to extend aid to underserved communities across the nation, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced. The initiative aims to ensure that no group, particularly those in rural areas, is excluded from governmental assistance programs.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the importance of AIM in reaching out to villagers, asserting that while significant investments are made in infrastructure like ports and highways, AIM plays a crucial role in grassroots development. Speaking at the AIM Kenduri Rakyat Programme, Anwar highlighted his longstanding association with AIM, underscoring his commitment to continue prioritizing this microfinancing scheme, which he regards as one of the world's best.
The Prime Minister, who also holds the Finance Minister portfolio, praised AIM's microfinancing model for its borrower-friendly interest rates, contrasting it with higher rates seen globally, such as those of Bangladesh's Grameen Bank. Anwar noted that while AIM initially offered small loans, these have been progressively increased, making a significant impact on the communities served.
Addressing allegations of politically motivated assistance, Anwar refuted claims that his support for the rakyat is election-driven. He stressed that his frequent participation in AIM initiatives showcases a genuine commitment to improving the welfare of underprivileged groups, rather than serving as a political maneuver.
Furthermore, Anwar highlighted the Federal Government's contributions to Johor's development, citing major investments in highways, bridges, and infrastructure projects as key factors driving the state's growth and progress.
