Government Invests RM1 Million in Downtown Kuala Lumpur Revitalisation

Kuala lumpur: The government has allocated a total of RM1 million for the Downtown Kuala Lumpur Grants Programme 2026 to support heritage preservation and the rejuvenation of the city centre. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, announced the initiative, which offers grants ranging from RM30,000 to RM100,000 for each approved project, aiming to benefit local communities, entrepreneurs, and creative art practitioners.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hannah Yeoh highlighted the dual narrative of Kuala Lumpur, emphasizing its historical significance and future potential. She remarked that the city's success will be gauged not only by new developments but also by its ability to attract residents, workers, investors, and visitors. This programme is designed to ensure that arts, culture, and heritage are pivotal in driving the domestic economy, aided by funding from the Ministry of Finance.

Hannah noted that Kuala Lumpur's designation as a UNESCO Creative City underlines the economic contributions of culture and heritage, including job creation and tourism attraction. She expressed her desire to transform Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) into a facilitator for economic growth, removing any perception of it being a hindrance.

In her interaction with reporters post-launch, Hannah mentioned that the eligibility criteria for the grants would soon be released by Think City, the strategic partner managing the programme. She encouraged participation from parties with innovative ideas, expressing eagerness to collaborate on projects that will invigorate Kuala Lumpur.
