Full Compliance With Risk Mitigation Code Can Help Curb Online Fraud, Says Teo

Bukit raja selatan: The government anticipates full compliance from all online platforms with the Risk Mitigation Code, which became effective on June 1 under the Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866), to enforce stronger measures against fraudulent and harmful online content. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching emphasized the importance of this compliance in curbing online fraud, as the code mandates platform providers to identify and verify advertisers before publishing paid advertisements on their platforms.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Teo Nie Ching expressed concern over the rising trend of online fraud, hoping that full adherence to the code will lead to a reduction in fraudulent content on the internet. She highlighted that there is currently a grace period for all online platforms until the end of the year. Speaking at the launch of 10 new electric delivery vehicles (EVs) by SPX Express in Bukit Raja Selatan, Teo noted that social media platforms have removed 99,693 pieces of fraudulent content as of July 15.

Teo conveyed confidence in the existing legal framework's ability to tackle online crimes and security issues, citing amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA), the Online Security Act, and the Cybercrime Act as sufficient measures. She asserted that there is no need for new laws to combat fraud but stressed the importance of allowing existing laws to take effect and demonstrate their impact.

The Deputy Minister also addressed the rise in online shopping, which has increased the demand for last-mile delivery vehicles. She emphasized the importance of using greener vehicles to mitigate environmental pollution. Teo expressed satisfaction with SPX Express, acknowledging its initiative to adopt greener vehicles and urging more logistics companies to follow suit in line with government policy promoting electric vehicle adoption.

Teo further advocated for the use of EVs by individuals and businesses, highlighting their environmental benefits. She noted that companies like SPX Express, by utilizing EV delivery vehicles, exemplify how digital economy growth can align with environmental sustainability efforts.

Additionally, Teo mentioned the government's ongoing efforts to enhance internet coverage and speed, pointing out that these improvements should be supported by measures to ensure a seamless user experience within the digital ecosystem.
