Terengganu: The collision incident involving a Class C and Class A fishing vessels in the waters off Pulau Kapas in Marang yesterday, which went viral on social media, was found to be due to the skipper's negligence.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Terengganu Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Maritime Captain Hamiludin Che Awang stated that the investigation revealed the incident occurred when the skipper of the Class C boat fell asleep at the helm, resulting in a collision with the rear of the Class A boat. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and an amicable resolution was reached by both parties involved.
"We have conducted a detailed investigation after receiving complaints and following the viral video alleging that the Class C boat intentionally collided with the Class A boat," said Hamiludin. "We have identified the boat owner, collected all related evidence, taken witness statements, and gathered the relevant information. The incident is believed to have been caused by negligence. The owner of the Class C boat has agreed to bear the repair costs of the Class A boat, estimated at around RM10,000."
The viral video, lasting one minute, showed a Class C fishing boat allegedly conducting fishing activities in the waters off Pulau Kapas, before colliding with a Class A fishing boat and subsequently fleeing the scene, sparking the anger of local fishermen.
Hamiludin emphasized that any form of negligence in operating vessels is taken seriously by his agency as it can pose a risk to the crew and other maritime communities. Vessel operators are reminded to ensure their health, get enough rest, and maintain full focus while navigating the vessel.
"MMEA will also intensify monitoring and enforcement in the state's waters to ensure the safety level of the maritime community is always preserved and that no unfortunate incidents occur," he added. Members of the public with information or complaints are encouraged to contact the Terengganu State Maritime Operations Centre at 013-7464357 or the emergency line 999 for immediate action.
